Bridging the gap: Wildfire and Agriculture in California

The threat of wide-sweeping, rapid-burning wildfires has been compounding exponentially. This integrated research project uses mixed methods socio-ecology research to assess how small, family farmers in CA are preparing for, responding to, and recovering from wildfires, and provide research-based solutions, educational curricula and trainings to farmers and agricultural professionals.

This project will enhance the quality of life for producers facing devastating threats of wildfire by equipping them with the practical tools to increase resilience to fire, sharing proposed adaptation strategies, and in turn supporting the viability of agricultural communities in fire prone regions.

The year 2020 brought the largest wildfire season in modern recorded history in the Western United States, burning 100 million acres of land in CA alone. In the future, this figure is expected to grow as the region’s accumulated fuels from decades of fire suppression combine with the effects of climate change. California is a breadbasket of the US, where 77,500 farms and ranches produce 50% of the nation’s fruits, nuts, and vegetables; 20% of the milk; and more than 400 different agricultural commodities. Though California farmers have expressed a need for holistic research approaches that incorporate advanced agroecosystem research frameworks and methodologies, few studies in California have explored the socio-ecological resilience of farming systems to climate change.

Climate change and wildfires pose a significant challenge for California agriculture. The unpredictability and sheer magnitude of CA wildfires can devastate farmers for many years. California’s farmers are increasingly confronted with wildfires through direct farm losses, smoke and ash health hazards, lost markets and time, evacuations and power outages. Scientific studies worldwide have not yet examined the vulnerability, adaptation, or resilience of agriculture, farmers, and farming communities to wildfires. In addition, scarce resources exist on farmer specific wildfire disaster preparedness and response. This research project aims to fill that gap.
